Giving to Colleges

Here’s an article I wrote when I had been thinking a lot about what it actually means to “support” a college program.

When someone gives to a program they love, they usually picture growth - more students, more opportunities, more impact.

But when a small college is under financial pressure, a gift can end up doing something different. Instead of expanding a program, it may help keep it afloat. Still important. Still “support.” But not always what the donor imagined.

This isn’t about anti-giving. Colleges absolutely need support. It’s just a case for asking better questions, and being clear about expectations.
